Shortlist, George Simon Prize for Junior Visual Art, TGA 2020

The Guyana Annual

Who We Are

The Guyana Annual is a literature and art magazine filled with a combination of Guyanese work: fiction, poetry, photography, visual art, essays, reviews and more. We discover talent via a yearly competition that offers modest cash prizes.

Established in 1915 "The Chronicle Christmas Annual" died out in the 80s. Years later, under the patronage of Dr Tulsi Dyal Singh and the vision of Mr Vic Insanally of Guyenterprise, a rebranded 'Guyana Annual' was resuscitated in 1998.

After the global COVID-19 pandemic, the running of the magazine was passed to Swain Inc. and publisher The Acclaim Group Inc in 2022 under the constant patronage of Dr Tulsi Dyal Singh.

Critical support for the lit and art magazine was received from the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport in the form of a Cultural and Creative Industries Grant in 2022.

Mission and Vision

AJ Seymour, a Guyana Annual Alumnus, wrote in the first Kyk-Over-Al about the aims of a Guyanese literary magazine in 1945:

"...an instrument to help forge a Guianese people, and to make them conscious of their intellectual and spiritual possibilities. There’s so much we can do as a people if we can get together more,[1]"

The Guyana Annual, 30 years its senior, continues to share this aim. We aim to highlight creative types of all backgrounds, with a focus on the up-and-coming and obscure. Our mission is to promote Guyanese art and literature, which ultimately develops culture and forges an identity. We are dedicated to developing quality creative writing and art and are committed to establishing a local creative industry. Our vision is to further promote the importance of culture to development, through a radio programme/podcast and national literature and arts festival.
